Why Plant a Pencil?
Our business is built on plantable pencils. But why would you plant a pencil in the first place?
We’re not serious people about most things, but we are serious about sustainability. We love the fact you can plant our pencils – it's a great conversation starter, talking point and funny gimmick – but that’s not all. We’re also using these pencils to make a sharp point about how we use the planet’s limited resources.
Think about what usually happens when you use a pencil or pen. When it comes to the end of its life, where does it end up? In the trash, where it will likely end up in a landfill or being incinerated, contributing to gases that warm the planet and contribute to climate change. It’s a one-way journey to negative climate impact.
Hello, circular economy!
The good news is that it doesn’t have to be like that. We’re rethinking how we use everyday objects – not just how you make them and how you use them, but also what happens to them after that. We’re inspired by the Circular Economy – where products can be used and recycled without having to use more resources or contribute negatively to our environment. A pencil that turns into a plant is just the tip of the iceberg.
We’re nerdy about the details of our manufacturing process – from the start, when we chop down trees in the Polish State Forest to provide the wood for our pencils, through to the Polish factory, a few kilometers away, that makes the pencils, the post-production facility that adds the seed capsules and the way we ship our finished pencils.
What happens next?
It doesn’t stop there – we're also always thinking about what happens next. How the pencil is packaged and with what type of material, what you do with it when you’ve got it between your fingers, and what happens when it’s too small to use any more. It’s all designed to be as minimal waste and low impact as possible.
